Music for the Jilted Generation is the second album by English electronic dance music band The Prodigy. The album was released through XL Recordings in July 1994. The album is largely a response to the corruption of the rave scene in Britain by its mainstream status as well as Great Britain's Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which criminalised raves and parts of rave culture. This is exemplified in the song 'Their Law' with the spoken word intro and the predominant lyric, the 'Fuck 'em and their law' sample. Many years later, after the controversy died down, Liam Howlett derided the title of the album, which he referred to as 'stupid', and maintained that the album was never meant to be political in the first place. The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
The best Prodigy album and definitely among top 10 of electronic dance music. 'Experience' was unpretentious, but slightly raw, while 'MFTJG' shows Liam as a mature producer who effortlessly shifts from one style to another across the album, while never missing the mark. The diversity is particularly striking; each track bursts with originality. All their consecutive albums sound painfully one-dimensional comparing to this one, and I always had a feeling that, starting from 'The fat of the land', Liam took greater care into nurturing the bands (electro-punk) image than into developing himself as an artist. You can't be a true electronic head if you don't like the incredible melody of 'One Love', the explosive beats of 'Voodoo People' and the dance fever of 'No Good'. I would even add 'Speedway' to this list: this track is so underrated.
Car noises definitely fits perfectly with electronic music. Anyway all has already been quoted, yet the second CD of this special edition is fantastic as well. Some live tracks, B-sides or remixes are present here.
The two best UK big beat groups are reunited here in the 'Voodoo People' Remix from the Chemicals who still were in their 'Dust' era back in 1994. If you already have the original stuff, I advise you this double album.
