Savage Serial Number Dates

Outwest guns, welcome to the forum. Savage starting using a letter as a prefix in the serial numbers in 1969, so if your Dad bought it in the late 70's it was either used or new old stock. They still pop up on occassion NIB. The date of manufacture for your rifle would be either 1967 or 1968.

Feb 15, 2018  The Gun Control Act of 1968 which took effect in October of that year is when serial numbers became mandatory and Savage started putting them on Model 24 guns. My question is, does anyone have a gun that has both the date code stamp (from 1968,1969, or 1970) and a serial number?

Mad Dog should have enough numbers in that range to give you the exact year. Also on the front of the lever attachment to the receiver you should see a small oval with a number followed by a letter. U = 1967 V = 1968. Hope this helps. New 99 just today, need some info pls I have a 99E in.308.

On top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight, it's marked as to what it is, and the caliber, plus it says Series A. The wood is not walnut, but some kind of light blonde wood with an extremely tight grain.

It looks similar to pine, but is not at all soft, and won't scar with my thumbnail. I was picking at the finish with my fingernail, and it's a surface only finish that lifts right off very easily. The checkering is impressed, not carved. Two questions if someone would help out.. The S/N is B7683XX, could you please date it for me? ID the wood please, and tell me if it will accept a penetrating stain and oil finish, or am I going to be confined to a spray on lacquer finish? Thank you gentlemen, regards to all.

Usually, it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame. It will appear as a small circle containing a number and a letter.

The letters correspond to the years shown in the following table. Significance of the numbers is not known.' *   *From page 1101 of Ned Schwing's 2004 Standard Catalog of Firearms, 14th Edition, published by Krause Publications of Iola, WI. I would like to add that I have found this circle, or oval, containing one or two numbers plus a single letter, just about anywhere and everywhere on the frame, but only on the outside of the frame, never inside. I have also found the circle or oval with letters and numbers on the barrel clusters, on the shot barrel or on the barrel assembly lug block.

While the letter within the circle always match on factory matching barrel and frame, the numbers never match, or at least that has always been my experience. These Date Codes are also present on the Model 94 frames and barrels, andI am sure on many others. The marks on the inside of the frame, where the lower barrel seats when closed, are what I would call assembly stampings, and match frame to barrel, found on underside of shot barrel near forend lug, and also sometimes found on the butt stock under the butt plate. ~EE      odell23- ' The following is a brief account (meaning I won't cover every detail before the internet commandos start harassing me for lack of completeness and not covering every little feature) of the groupings of Savage 24's.

This is not a concrete order of which grouping came first and does not mean the whole grouping was made before the next grouping was produced and offered for sale, this is just an easier way to see all of the varieties with similar features and minimize confusing the stamped designations.
